Spring Black Bear Hunts

Our Montana spring bear season runs from April 15 to May 31. At PRO we only book the last three weeks of the season to give each of our hunters optimal conditions for success. Montana is a spot and stalk only state. You will spend time glassing slides, clear cuts, meadows, etc. As these bruins emerge from their dens they have a ravenous appetite.

Due to their winter weight loss they must eat and now. Their favorite early season food is fresh spring grasses, later they will turn to elk calves as top on the menu. We concentrate on areas that "green up" early. As you can see by the dates Montana's spring comes a bit later than most areas.

Montana bears are known for their thick beautiful coats. Most bears in our area will run between 150 and 250 lbs. There are big bears in these woods. We have shot bears approaching the 400 lb. mark.

Probably one of the best things about our area is the extremely high percentage of color phase bears. Most years we are close to 50% color phase bears. The bears range from pitch black, chocolate, cinnamin to blonde. Some have white patches on their chests called "blazes" and some do not.

PRO's spring bear hunts are run out of our lodge in Sula, Montana. Our lodge is in the heart of our best bear areas. We access areas each day by 4x4 trucks and walk from there. On a good week of hunting we expect to see a couple bears a day.

Weather and a little luck go a long way. All in all it is one of our favorite hunts, because it's a beautiful time of the year to be in the field and there are very few hunters in the field.
